SHESGOT - A House Into A Body

2026 (Urgence disk/loop produzioni)
gothic, post-rock, shoegaze

The Marche-based band Shesgot was formed by Michele Caserta (drums, bass) and Matteo Palmieri (guitar, bass), later joined by Federico Palmieri (vocals). The group debuted in 2021 with the solid gothic/post-punk album “The Seeker” and, after Giulia Tanoni came on board on bass, has now released the new “A House Into A Body”.

While the debut was marked by a strongly gothic, crepuscular imprint, the new LP doesn't represent a break from that sound, but rather introduces significant changes, tearing through some of the darkness with more pronounced post-rock nods and shoegaze atmospheres, more expansive structures and deeply reverbed guitars.

It's surprising to hear Federico Palmieri's voice at times recall the declamatory style of Emidio Clementi in a dark-tinged version, and at other times the more strained singing of Brian McMahan of Slint. Post-rock, then, but shot through with dark shades that mark a clean break from the band's previous work.

While the single “The Return” occasionally leans toward Joy Division-style darkness, more often it's the post-rock guitars that take over, as in the opening “The Hall”, a hypnotic track that opens like a walk into a haunted house. Shoegaze detonates in “Home”, just two minutes of layered, enveloping, magnetic guitars.

Worth highlighting is Giulia Tanoni's bass sound, dry and hammering, typically post-punk and always highly incisive, particularly on “Backseat”, “The Fountain” and “Mark E. Smith”.

The band's strength lies above all in its ability to find a mature synthesis of its influences. Italian dark rock is still alive.
