SHE PAST AWAY - Mizantrop

2026 (Fabrika)
darkwave, gothic

Years of waiting haven't dented the popularity of a project that remains among the most beloved by the dark crowd. Credit goes above all to a landmark debut (“Belirdi Gece”) and its solid follow-up (“Narin Yalnızlık”), two records that let the Anatolian duo leave their mark on the last decade, notwithstanding a less inspired third album (“Disko Anksiyete”, from 2019).

Truth be told, we'd already picked up on signs of a possible comeback back in 2024, when Volkan Caner and Doruk Öztürkcan served up a fine appetizer (“İnziva”, a track carried by a striking expressionist video), followed by a featuring spot on a Ductape track (another goth outfit on the rise, also hailing from Turkey).

The imagery of the second single “Mizantrop” hinted at this fourth, self-titled effort, which just clears thirty minutes (the physical release, though, won't be out until April). The track in question works as a sort of anthem to the apathy of dark generations (“I know, I'm a silent joke, a joyless pessimist, a misanthrope dressed in black. The names you choose, the labels you stick on me, believe me, I couldn't care less”), the very same apathy we find running through a songwriting approach devoid of any real spark and clearly assembled on autopilot (as in “Kuyu Mezar”). Then again, She Past Away can comfortably coast within a scene that's often more conservative than it should be.

So, should we settle for this today? Only in small doses, not just because the element of surprise has by now become institutionalized (we're talking about the Turkish-language vocals), but also because endlessly repeating a well-worn formula eventually wears thin: leaving aside the aforementioned “İnziva” (by far the best track here), the inspiration seems to have lost the drive of their older releases (the more obsessive “Sessiz Orman” and “Kaygan Kayalıklar” come across as merely adequate).

One thing's for sure: despite it all, She Past Away will keep winning over fans and playing to ever-larger crowds (a tour is already underway that will see them take the stage across the States and Europe, Italy excluded). In their case, a consistent, distinctive sound makes up for a drop in quality that's sometimes quite noticeable. No harm done — many fans probably won't even notice.
