Psychedelic Source Records is the name of a Hungarian collective that takes the concept of psychedelic music to its extreme, with lengthy improvised jams that rival, both in the sheer size of their catalogue (a hundred records in just five years, enough to put King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard to shame) and their lysergic quotient, the giants of the genre, from America's Grateful Dead to Japan's Acid Mothers Temple. To date, these sessions have spawned around a hundred releases in which, in varying proportions depending on the recording, kraut rhythms, hyper-dilated psychedelia, cosmic influences and space rock all come to the fore.
If "Demonkraut" (2024) was the kraut apotheosis and "This Is" (2024) leaned harder into space-rock influences, the new "Pseudopredestinated" – true to its title – returns to the project's origins, pushing the lysergic accelerator to the floor and racing at full speed through Amon Düül II, the Pink Floyd of "Live At Pompeii", Hawkwind and the Grateful Dead. It's hard to talk of a calling card for a band with a hundred releases already behind them, but the three twenty-minute-long compositions on "Pseudopredestinated" make for an excellent passepartout into the fantastical world of the Hungarian collective.
From the Floydian "Precambriality" to the endless guitar improvisations of "Protoplanetarian" and "Postpurposes", Psychedelic Source Records prove (as if proof were needed) that psychedelia will never die.
