NAMU - Wretched Spawns Of Iniquitous Orders

2026 (DK)
black metal, post-metal, prog-metal

Here's how "Wretched Spawns Of Iniquitous Orders" is described on its Bandcamp page: “A collection of deeply personal experiences recounting brutal, merciless abductions by beings not of this planet”. Evocative, certainly, but when you add that next to nothing is known about London's Namu, what emerges is a picture that's downright mysterious. This debut album demands total immersion in shifting alien visions, delivered to the listener through a metal that's heavily progressive but also fiercely black. The complexity of the compositions merges with furious explosions of violence and evocative melodic, atmospheric surges, stripping the listener of any fixed points of reference.

“Catharsis In Statis” combines rhythmic bombardments in Meshuggah territory with desolate guitar melodies, rounded off with dizzying black-metal whirlwinds. The second half slows down for a dramatic finale. A black-metal riff sets fire to “Edict Of Absolution”, an anguished plunge into the abyss that brightens into a dreamy atmospheric moment. A crescendo follows, moving from melancholy to ferocity by way of the epic.
A similar dynamic runs through the following “Ineffable Constructs”, with obsessive rhythmic mechanisms and unsettling melodies, and “A Fold's Gather”, with more pronounced atmospheric elements. An arpeggio from the previous track becomes the starting point for “The Fibre Prismatic”, an almost baroque interweaving that erupts into the usual prog-black blend, which also spills over into space music worthy of Tangerine Dream.
An Emperor-like assault is the starting point for “Aberration Of Light”, which then busies itself sounding savage, epic and moving all at once. The grand finale is entrusted to “Triptych”, the most ambitious track: a prayer crashes against a wall of black metal while a sinister melody rings out; the dangerously unstable mixture finally channels its energies toward a wrenching climax that fades into cosmic emptiness.

Comparable to other examples of space-inspired technical metal, this "Wretched Spawns Of Iniquitous Orders" is an "Absolute Elsewhere" by Blood Incantation that swaps out death metal for black metal. That extra something, though, is the substantial melodic contribution, which lends the whole an epic, tragic force without diluting the power of its most brutal moments. A surprise, from an artist who remains essentially a mystery.
