MISS GRIT - Under My Umbrella

2026 (Mute)
alt-pop, indietronica

After the futurist debut of “Follow The Cyborg” (2023), the second album from Miss Grit takes an almost opposite turn, because the gaze is no longer pointed toward the future but inward. If the first record imagined the emergence of an artificial consciousness, “Under My Umbrella” seems to document the reverse process: a machine slowly becoming human again.

This second chapter from Margaret Sohn (a musician raised in the Midwest who later settled in New York) was born out of a fairly radical period of isolation: months of solo touring across North America, driving from city to city with no company. A condition that ended up seeping into the record like a psychological background noise, a blend of exhaustion, lucidity and vulnerability.

“Tourist Mind” perfectly introduces this state of mind, amid layered synths, jittery rhythms and almost cinematic sonic architecture: it's not so much a song about anxiety as a depiction of its inner movement. The theme is amplified in “Mind Disaster”, one of the record's sharpest moments. Here Miss Grit translates dissociation and out-of-body experiences through elastic beats, synth lines that fold back on themselves, and a voice that stays surprisingly calm while everything around it vibrates.

One of the most hypnotic passages is “Where Is My Head?”, a suspended track that turns identity confusion into a kind of dreamlike soundscape. This contrast becomes one of the album's most interesting mechanisms: emotions aren't dramatized but literally analyzed.

The record moves within a fairly recognizable lineage. The dark, velvety atmosphere of a certain strand of trip-hop inevitably recalls Massive Attack (as in “Overflow”), while certain melodic and timbral tensions bring to mind the emotional electronics of Björk in her “Homogenic” years. At other times, an art-rock sensibility close to Radiohead even surfaces, especially in the way technology becomes a tool for expressive alienation.

In its desire to maintain a homogeneous atmosphere, “Under My Umbrella” tends to settle into a consistent, steady emotional temperature, partly due to the heavily treated and filtered vocals. While this reinforces the sense of estrangement running through the project, it can also dull its immediacy. No matter, though, because Miss Grit knows how to turn electronic music into a space where vulnerability is also a form of protection, like the umbrella suggested by the cover image.
