JULINKO - Naebula

2026 (Maple death/avantgarde)
dreamgaze, ethereal-wave

Although on the pages of OndaRock we've already praised Giulia Parin Zecchin's voice in the Bosco Sacro project ("Gem" now dates back to 2023), it should be said that for over a decade the Venetian artist (and poet) has been known chiefly as a solo entity. We're talking about Julinko, a name capable of blending ethereal visions with doomgaze incursions, for a pagan ritual that has already proven worthy of attention in the past.

"Naebula" is an album that slips into the most nocturnal, crepuscular minimalism, a work in which Giulia's vocals stand as a pillar rather than a mere accompaniment. Here the reference points are even more wide-ranging: from Jarboe to Sinead O'Connor, right through to the recent dark-folk drift so dear to Anna Von Hausswolff (the use of organ, decisive in certain passages, brings back into circulation those atmospheres already duly shaped by the Swedish musician).

It's the central section of the record that sends little shivers down our spine, starting with the introspective notes of "Skin Dress", one of the album's high points. Also excellent is "Unleash", a sort of drone-prayer steeped in noir ecstasy and dark omens, as is the long ambient procession of "Kiss The Lion's Tongue" (nine minutes in which Julinko's soul reflects a dimension as ethereal as it is hallucinated).

Within the tracks of "Naebula" one senses not only a greater artistic awareness, but also that urge to ride even deeper currents, without disowning the old repertoire in the process (the electric surge of the brief but effective "Throw Ashes"). Because here the fateful shift is completed, moving from the doomgaze of the previous "Nèktar" (2019) to the dreamgaze of this new, glacial outing, an intimate, dreamy record that's deliberately repetitive yet at the same time charged with vital cosmic energy. After all, in Julinko's music the sky is constantly cut through by clouds (just listen to the surprising "Cloudmachine") and by a tension that discharges all the way down into the earth, into the bowels of an arcane place where every ritual turns into catharsis.
