Generating dialogues between kindred artists. That's the premise behind the "Reflections" series curated by New York's RVNG Intl., which for its third instalment brings together Félicia Atkinson and Christina Vantzou. Two talented, experienced composers, bound by a deep friendship, fascinated by seascapes that aren't by chance the subject of this long-distance collaboration.
The places chosen as sources of inspiration are ones dear to them: some – Greece – openly declared through the use of field recordings, others – Normandy, Rome – kept as a sensory suggestion. Atkinson's atmospheric modulations and whispered, ASMR-style recitations blend perfectly with Vantzou's ethereal imagery, tinged with a faint modern classical flavour, generating an amniotic, highly cinematic whole. Sound becomes image, turning into a narrative that draws on both artists' voices and instruments.
The barely perceptible spoken word over the vaguely orchestral fabric of "Film Still/ The Sea" flows unreservedly into a stream of synthetic soundscapes ("A Secret", "Amour, A Liquid State"), ambient echoes from the Land of the Rising Sun ("With/ You/ Movement/ Creatures") and a paring-down to pure essence ("Shines For Eternity"). A pace as slow as it is inexorable, guided by the sound of water, by nature merging with the language of drones and classical inflections, culminating in the cosmically tinged melancholy of "Scorpio Purple Skies", enriched by the presence of John Also Bennett. A "gentle" shipwreck steeped in contemplation.
