CYPRESS HILL - Dios bendiga

2026 (Self-released)
hardcore hip-hop, Latin hip-hop

It's incredible that Cypress Hill hadn't already released an all-Spanish album before now, especially given the excellent success of the compilation "Los Grandes Éxitos En Español" back in 1999. This "Dios bendiga", the eleventh entry in their discography, makes up for it with a revitalizing effort that still carries a few regrets.

The band finally stakes its claim on the Latin hip-hop scene it helped define and drive to success. The fairly classic style of opener "Wacha Trucha" (feat. Alemán), with Dr. Dre's West Coast synths up front, makes clear they're not looking to revolutionize or upend anything, just to reaffirm themselves as classics. They manage it with the hypnotic nursery-rhyme cadence of "Campeones" (feat. Mellow Man Ace), which reeks of the street and working-class neighborhoods, with the more hardcore "Sueños" (feat. Coyote) and "El perro y el coyote" (feat. Guapo), and with the livelier "No tengo miedo" (feat. Sick Jacken), featuring a melancholy pop chorus with filtered vocals.
Elsewhere, surprises are few and far between, and the sense that autopilot has been engaged confirms what we've already seen on several other recent Cypress Hill albums. Perhaps the closing "Otra" sums it all up best, yet another ode to marijuana over a Latin rhythm that confirms the lack of ambition: it's simply a chance to redo what made them famous, in Spanish and for their Latino audience.

Thirty-five years after their debut, Cypress Hill cash in on their Latin hip-hop credentials with an album of reaffirmations, self-celebratory and capable of entertaining at its best moments. It lacks the creative vision of their classics, but on the other hand it manages to bring into focus a side of their hip-hop aesthetic that otherwise lacked a proper testament. Perhaps, though, it's truly time for them to bid their audience farewell with dignity.
