CASPIO - Cosa resterà di noi

2026 (V4v)
alt-rock

Born in 2019 as the solo electro-wave project of multi-instrumentalist Giorgio Di Gregorio from Trieste, in the post-pandemic period Caspio became the name of a fully-fledged band, with the founder joined by Enrico Muccin (guitar), Riccardo Roschetti (bass) and Nicolas Morassutto (drums). Towards the end of 2024, the album "Noi che viviamo in un mondo perfetto" marked their rock-oriented turn, revealing clear Nineties influences, now confirmed on "Cosa resterà di noi", a raw, direct work that makes no secret of the band's defining reference points. It's a restless alt-rock that chews on the lessons of the late Nineties, songs that feel like they were conceived the old-fashioned way, in a rehearsal room thick with smoke, beer and feedback.

It's the same tension that fueled the records of both Smashing Pumpkins and Verdena, the main sources of inspiration for the album's first three minutes, and for a track ("Cambiare") that immediately sets out the overall mood. This is music with an analog heart, pure neurosis channeled through guitar strings, a solid rhythm section, distorted openings reaching for cathartic release, and a voice whose first point of reference is Edda's delivery in the days of Ritmo Tribale, among the forefathers of the Italian independent scene as far back as the second half of the Eighties.

Then "Forse è tardi" kicks in and we're still in Milan, but this time on the Ministri side of things, the following generation, with Caspio edging towards the swelling sonic curves of "Sand Inside Your Love", again evoking Smashing. It's precisely in this short-circuit between the Bergamo scene (Verdena) and the Milanese one (Ritmo Tribale, Ministri) that "Cosa resterà di noi" finds its true identity: layers of guitars that press aggressively into the space, a taste for saturation in certain chord progressions, a rural psychedelia that drifts towards the city, among the tower blocks of the outskirts, losing its natural component but keeping the mud.

Caspio aren't after the polished perfection of contemporary pop, but rather that nervous tension that favors emotional urgency, the searing tear, without shying away from the odd nu-gaze nod in line with Nothing. This is an album that, even stripped of all its electric fury, would still stand on the strength of the melodic instinct underpinning every track, as shown in its most tender moments, "Un ultimo sguardo" and "Ma tu ci pensi mai?".

Described by its own authors as "the emotional diary of a disillusioned generation", "Cosa resterà di noi" is a record that wins you over through the complexity of its references, the coherence with which they're blended together, and the courage to reclaim the noble roots of the Italian underground.
