BVDUB - The Catastrophe Machine

The torrential sonic flow of Brock Van Wey resurfaces on Dronarivm - the independent label founded in Moscow but based in the Netherlands since 2022 - in its most atmospheric guise, under the bvdub moniker. As is often the case, this is an extended journey split into just four tracks, finding the American producer grappling with his most emotional dimension, the one furthest removed from the pulsing textures of his early work.

Anyone who follows Van Wey's work knows perfectly well that they're unlikely to encounter anything unexpected here. The core material — supple synthetic frequencies threaded with spectral vocal modulations and occasional rhythmic passages — remains unchanged, just as his reliance on harmonic textures injected into a densely layered whole stays constant. It takes only a few seconds of "Collapsed Under Your Lies" to recognize the author's hand, yet once again that's more than enough to get pulled into the flow.

There's something magnetic about the way the fabric is built, about the shifting intensity handled with such skill, that it wraps around you and pulls you in, makes you hold your breath and knows how to open onto divergent horizons (just listen to the pronounced pulsing turn of "Masses In Motion" to appreciate its force) without ever letting the tension slacken. Immersive like few others, bvdub's ambient formula — despite some occasionally excessive repetition — needs no tricks to shine, relying instead on the sensitivity of a tireless artist.
