Originally from Russia but now Norwegian in every practical sense (frontman Roman V has lived in the land of fjords for several years), Bizarrekult arrive at the third chapter of their discography, renewing a black metal formula capable of blending the genre's frostbitten roots with a progressive, avant-garde attitude, helped along by some intriguing collaborations.
Thematically, "Alt Som Finnes" springs from a deep existential crisis, from a crushing awareness of the surrounding emptiness to which the individual is condemned as they ask a thousand questions in a desperate search for meaning. Here we find many of the ingredients of the most introspective and philosophical black metal, the strand that has always stood out over time for its greater conceptual maturity.
The screaming on "Hun" ties into all this: a taste of painful ferocity before the perfect storm, namely "Blikket Hennes", a good six minutes that set aside the blast beat to make room for an inner torment turned into music, bringing in the clean vocals of Yusaf Parvez of Dødheimsgard (one of the pivotal bands in the transformation and cross-pollination of black metal, going all the way back to the 90's). It's a mood we also find in the pure post-black of "Håp" (armed with a break that stares straight into the eyes of Sigur Rós) and again in the closing bars of "Tohmet" — the first track sung in English in Bizarrekult's history — where guest vocals come courtesy of Kim Song Sternkopf of Danish band Møl. A collaboration that's bold in its own way, fittingly placed as the album's epilogue.
While the dark march of "Avmakt" turns out to be more conventional than intended, it's with "Drøm" that Bizarrekult set that unhealthy, experimental charge back in motion, present here in heavy doses both in the driving riff and in the track's central section, when every wound seems to want to hang suspended in the dark.
"Verdens Verste" (a track Norwegian to the bone) and the following "Aversjon" are every bit as strong, two solid entries that only confirm a record of higher quality than the band's previous releases. An important step forward.
