One of the newest and most worthwhile projects from Italian label Unexplained Sounds Group has just been released, dedicated to Stephen King's novel and, above all, to Stanley Kubrick's film, “Shining“. Specifically, the compilation “Overlook. Music Inspired By Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining” attempts to create an apocryphal soundtrack not so much for the film itself, but for the desolate spaces of the famous, terrifying Overlook Hotel. The twelve tracks, suspended between ambient, dark-ambient, drone and experimental electronics, turn the hotel into a world to inhabit from which there's no escape: an utterly inextricable labyrinthine tangle of ghosts, killers and psychosis.
This is because, on reflection, the true protagonist of the film is neither Jack Torrance nor his little son Danny, but the very space in which the events unfold. The Overlook Hotel is a malevolent place that brings psychosis to the surface, gives shape to nightmares and, in doing so, allows the most abominable thoughts dormant in the unconscious to emerge. The hotel thus takes on the guise of a living being that endlessly repeats its own actions without ever changing, like an aimless journey through the Overlook's maze.
The compilation translates the very essence of the Overlook into sound, a timeless space, without dwelling on the film's characters, who only inhabited it temporarily. Unexplained Sounds Group achieves this with the help of its usual roster of musicians, who craft avant, dark-ambient and drone sounds in an attempt to ideally inhabit the Overlook's rooms and capture their deepest, most authentic aspects. From the hauntological reworking of the original score for “The Overlooked”, which lives on like a ghost in the hotel's corridors, to the avant-garde strings of “Redrum”, all the way to the orchestra of ghostly voices in “Descent”, everything ultimately points back to the Overlook itself.
The Overlook Hotel is still alive, and waiting for new visitors.
