YEARS OF DENIAL - Love Cuts

“Suicide Disco Vol. 2” (2023) was the record that marked the turning point. Less experimentation, more room for a more direct, angular sound, perfectly balanced between sinuous electro-EBM and dark darkwave undertones (this interplay between synthesizers and female-voiced vocals keeps working, even though the trend has by now been inexorably watered down by overexposure).

“Love Cuts” (six tracks in all) carries on in the same direction, previewing the next chapter of a hypothetical trilogy set to be completed in the coming months. This time the Franco-Czech duo literally splits the vinyl down the middle, giving us three dark compositions on one side and a much more danceable trio on the other.

If the dark atmospheres of “Devil In A Skirt” show us a duo in inspired, great form, with the following “Affair De Coeur” and “Hide & Seek” Years Of Denial don't stray too far from the theme, gliding along an invisible line not lacking in elegant magnetism. However, to really light up the night, you have to wait for the fateful B-side, first with the synthetic jolts of “We Are The Party” (when body music turns sensual) and finally with the pitch-black club gem “AI Lover”, probably one of the best tracks the project has ever written.

The less exciting “In Your Bed” thus remains confined to the background, despite its neurotic, obsessive crescendo.

While waiting to see Jerome Tcherneyan and Barkosina Hanusova in action on Italian stages (the duo will soon perform in both Bologna and Caserta), there's still time to immerse yourself in the notes of this small but significant work, obviously recommended to devotees of the new generation of dark sound.
