VARIETÉ - Sieć Indry

2025 (Mystic production)
nu jazz, post-punk, trip-hop

Bass to the fore, jagged guitars, nervous rhythms that sidestep rock's frontal approach while retaining its physical charge. The voice is a subdued murmur that always seems on the verge of withdrawing, leaving everything to the interplay between the instruments: "Sieć Indry" is a record where the restless textures of post-punk intersect with jazz forms and tones, trapped in shifting, material eddies of atmosphere - though never luminous ones. This is dark, nocturnal, unaccommodating music, one that entrusts the direction of listening to its rhythmic and timbral lines - and even more so, to how they interlock.

Thirty years of underground, weaving together jazz textures and post-punk edges

The title, translatable as "Indra's Net," refers to the Buddhist concept of a cosmic web studded with jewels, where each node reflects all the others in an image of total universal interdependence. But rather than a declared concept, "Sieć Indry" should be read as a further point of settling in Variété's journey, a band that for decades has worked on an unstable yet recognizable equilibrium.

Active since the Eighties and historic protagonists of Polish alternative rock, Varieté debuted on record in 1993 with a work steeped in an oppressive coldwave, already shot through with more expansive openings. Over time, jazz language – always present in filigree – has become an integral part of their writing, without smoothing out the rough edges of their sound, but making it more mobile and unpredictable.

"Sycylia" is exemplary in this sense: a shadowy, almost whispered track that moves between downtempo jazz and trip-hop, with an angular bass holding the whole architecture together. The mood is feverish but controlled, and the comparison with the foggy nu jazz of fellow countrymen Niechęć can help anyone familiar with them get their bearings: the same attention to rhythmic tension and to the gaps, in similar border zones between rock and electric jazz – though Varieté remain decidedly drier, less inclined to stretch things out. "Chleb, wino i przestrzeń" ("Bread, Wine and Space") is emblematic: the pace is jagged, with percussion and sequencer tracing an almost kraut backdrop, and spoken word inserted as an atmospheric element, broken up by hiccups of bass and guitar.

A sonic web that expands between dub echoes, techno hypnosis and metallic funk

Track after track, the album reveals a porous approach to styles: every influence absorbed doesn't divert the path but expands its perimeter, like concentric circles around a recognizable core. In "Waikiki", disorienting sax and synth introduce an exotic, decadent mood, subdued yet restless; the guitar solo remains amphibious, suspended between noise, staccato bursts and sustained notes. "Księżniczka" ("Princess") lets dub echoes surface, while "Dobra Droga" ("Good Journey") builds hypnotic acid-techno-style loops, always underpinned by a fractured, metallic funk.

A broadening of horizons that often tightens into circular shapes, returns that, after expanding, close the space back in around the listener. In "Satelity" the voice is bent by digital processing, the instruments seem to move on murky, irregular orbits, immersed in a nebula of oscillating synths. "Taka miłość nie jest dla mnie" ("This Kind of Love Is Not for Me") closes on a more sensual, chiaroscuro register, built around a round, enigmatic bass cycle, a hair's breadth from the most crepuscular Tool.

With "Sieć Indry" Varieté confirm themselves masters of a rare trajectory: that of a band growing older by broadening its own vocabulary, without giving up the tension that has defined it. An album where pressure and expansion turn out to be two sides of the same coin.
