BLACK DOG - PLAID - Loud Ambient

2025 (Dust science)
ambient, electronica, techno

The opening track "They Came For My Head" begins with shimmering, repeating synth layers accompanied by light beats, recalling the work of Boards Of Canada. The deep synthetic bassline that bursts in after a while gives the track depth and makes it, in its own way, danceable. "I Will Cleanse You" builds up layers of glitch and synth shimmer, while a sonic jolt arrives via the full-bodied bassline, bringing tension where before there was calm.

We're far from ambient music as it's conventionally understood (the album title, incidentally, is an ironic nod to how Black Dog sometimes describe certain sounds of theirs) and much closer to that strain of IDM built on broken rhythms and obsessive rhythmic repetition. "Working Class Sabbath" conjures a fearsome industrial darkness, like a genuine witches' sabbath of sonic shards and waves of noise, while "Double Drop Nightmare" is an elegant example of how skilfully Black Dog can handle minimal techno: amid hisses and distant sounds, the track builds atmosphere while keeping the body moving with ease. "Pamphlet" closes the album with a triumph of almost symphonic analogue synthesizers, a light rhythmic bed and sounds that wrap around you with delicacy.
