post-rock

It has taken a full six years to get the pleasure of hearing a new LP from The Singer Is Dead, the Milan-based instrumental post-rock band arriving at their third album. The quartet had already won over listeners with their first two records, and this new work stays firmly on the same course, without jolts but without any dip in creativity.

The recipe is there and it works, so the idea is not to change it. Everything is clear from "Love Is A Dumb Sport", one of the most successful moments, which contains all the coordinates of the band's instrumental post-rock, indebted to the sounds of Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. Those influences are reworked with a certain recognizability, balancing irony and lightness of sound, with crescendos and accelerations that remain impetuous.

The Singer Is Dead are now masters of guitar-centred post-rock. Two guitars, a bass and a drum kit converse perfectly, building intricate sonic structures and post-rock rides that remain consistently engaging. "The Girl Sleeping Next To Me" and "Djoser's Pyramid", with their slow opening that gradually gives way to acceleration, are two tracks typical of the band's idea of post from these Milan-based brothers, the Doldi: songs that, while offering no particular novelties, are always credible and interesting, minute after minute.

This is enough to rightfully place The Singer Is Dead among the Italian post-rock scene's authoritative voices.
