JOSEPHINE FOSTER - Godmother

2022 (Fire)
ambient-synth, folk, psych

Yet another exploratory act, the new work does not betray Foster's masterful handling of stylistic variety. While the opening of "Hum Menina" seems to depict the ancestral folk we're accustomed to, after a minute an alternative path appears, a parallel road made of synths and electronic disturbances that will accompany every track on the album.

The difficult obstacle course of "Godmother" ultimately takes on a meaning of its own: the bothersome electronic sounds are just as spectral and spiritual as the orthodox folk fabric of the past; at times they destabilize the structural framework of the compositions, wearing down the fragile country structure of tracks like "Flask Of Wine," without, fortunately, undermining the fairy-tale grace of the voice in the broad, incorporeal ballad "Dali Rama."

Expressive minimalism emerges victorious, fortified by a sonic asceticism that brings to mind, all at once, Alice Coltrane, early Kraftwerk, and Moondog. New horizons, which at times, I won't deny, come across as unsettling, for an artist who has chosen to look beyond the border, expanding the subtle disturbances that ran through "Faithful Fairy Harmony" without renouncing her vocation for spiritual, mystical and psychedelic folk.

In this light, the most successful pages are the psychedelic folk of "Nun Of The Above" and the deep weird-folk nemesis of "The Sum Of Us All," where the hypnotic electronic incursions weigh it down until it becomes a hypnotic mantra.

Exquisite arrangements and the ever-engaging voice are clear signs of a poetics that, despite everything, has remained unchanged. "Godmother" is a descent into the underworld, a new form of sonic baroqueness pierced by the minimal nature of Josephine Foster's songwriting, an uncertain step that opens new horizons and leaves a delightful feeling of mysticism and devotion of an ancestral nature.
