BUZZ KULL - Fascination

Third album, third bullseye in a row for Australia's Marc Dwyer, one of the most credible interpreters of a certain strand of dark-tinged electronic minimalism. "Fascination" (out on Avant!, the Bologna-based label active since 2007) confirms everything good about his previous releases, relaunching that solid voice-synthesizer pairing now thoroughly road-tested in a live setting.

Buzz Kull's sound keeps growing denser and more full-bodied, pushing forcefully toward territory reminiscent of old-school electro body music. This comes through in a series of tracks that are invariably cold and hypnotic, but above all danceable: that's the case with the dazzling title track or further inspired passages like "Do You See" and "Last In The Club", episodes in which it's practically impossible to stand still.

You dance non-stop, but inside a grey, unlit tunnel (a title like "Dancing With Machines", another heavyweight cut on the record, is quite telling in that sense). The stylistic connection with the already acclaimed "New Kind Of Cross" (2018) is thus reaffirmed without any hesitation, for a result that is once again convincing as well as compelling.

For the Sydney musician, whose roots are firmly planted in the 80's (from Fad Gadget onward), "Fascination" represents the album of full maturity, a record built on an analog awareness that certainly doesn't need to update itself to the present to win over both old and new listeners. What matters is quality, and Marc Dwyer, from this standpoint, has found a formula as simple as it is winning.
