After half a dozen twelve-inches released on Hivern Disc, Permanent Vacation and Young Turks, John Talabot (known to friends and family as Oriol Riverola) finally releases his debut album, "ƒin". And yet the Spanish DJ and producer has been playing clubs and festivals in his home country for more than ten years – those who've heard him describe nights spent in the grip of melodic techno and Border Community hits. In the two mix albums he released over the course of 2011, Talabot showed an eclecticism unfamiliar to many of his more celebrated peers, mixing together Matthew Herbert and Maria Minerva, Warpaint and Omar S.
With his debut album, "ƒin", John Talabot has set out to shake up the world of deep house. A tropical jungle of sounds and moods envelops the opening moments of “Depak Ine”, the gorgeous track that opens the record. A sound reminiscent of Portable's multicoloured techno, yet in some ways even more abstract. Dance music for imaginary journeys: time and again, in the Barcelona DJ's tracks, the rhythm pulls back to make room for synthetic digressions and exotic aromas. Much like the psychedelic travels of Caribou, but with a vision more rooted in the world of the dancefloor: “Destiny” is house music streaked with soul, with a choral pop quality worthy of Peter Gabriel. “Journeys” updates the model, chasing the mirages of the latest Panda Bear.
Among the techno records not to be missed in the first half of 2012.
