ADERLATING - Spear Of Gold And Seraphim Bone, Part One

2011 (Consouling Sound)
harsh noise, symphonic dark-ambient

Maurice De Jong is still among us, this time under the Aderlating moniker and teaming up with Eric aka Mowlawner. After the compelling "Devotional Hymns", "Spear Of Gold And Seraphim Bone, Part One" continues the journey towards hell, still riding a sound that, between pitch-black dark-ambient, abstract noise and freeze-dried shreds of metal, allows no concessions to hope, since it utterly disowns the very meaning of redemption.

Darkness is his kingdom, and Maurice ferries us through yet another symphony of evil, even if the quality isn't always up to his full potential. On the other hand, continuing to work the same material, obsessively focusing on his own filthy visions and his own desperate view of the world, also carries the risk of showing a few cracks. Still, De Jong has by now accustomed us to this relentless, obsessive exploration of the most terrible corners of the human soul, and so, even if the "devotional hymns" remain unsurpassed in their perverse balance between degenerate religiosity and gloomy esotericism, listening to these six new compositions is still recommended to anyone who considers the Dutch musician one of the most interesting names around.

Getting into the heart of the record, we move seamlessly through the icy haze of "Black Emperor At The Temple's Gate", the grim and sinister cosmic sprawl of "Descending the Naraka I", the black metal transfigured into transcendental radiation of the title track, the ecstatic female choir overwhelmed by metaphysical din of "A Burial On The Slopes Of Mount Sinai", and the two nauseating afterlife frescoes of "Engel Der Wrake" and "A New Plaque For Every Triumph", close to the terrible lands of his most important and visionary project, Gnaw Their Tongues.
