DISAPPEARS - Lux

2010 (Kranky)
garage-wave, post-punk, psychedelia

A rock band on Kranky. Something particularly “rare”, indeed. Anything but rare, though, is the sound of Disappears, here making their debut with “Lux” (prior to this, just a couple of singles and a live album – “Live Over the Rainbo” – released in a limited edition).

Distorted and moderately dark, obsessive yet gently lysergic, as the opener “Gone Completely” makes clear right away, the music of this Chicago quartet seems intent on retracing certain eras of rock history, carving out a small corner for itself in the hearts of fans of those sounds straddling post-punk, psychedelia and garage.

So let's take a leap through time and head over to New Zealand (“Magics”), or a bit further north, to roam the desert alongside Feedtime, albeit with a touch of proto-stoner (“Pearly Gates”). In between, you'll find the Velvet Underground filtered through the contribution of the Fall (“Not Nothing”, “Old Friend”, “New Cross”), or all that rabble who, over the years, have tried to dust off their most ambiguous side (the title track).

There's hostility in the lyrics, a sense of powerlessness that translates into sly rage, at times even reaching for the existential abyss of a spectral desolation (“Little Ghost”). And yet, the music, despite all the baggage of memories it carries, never manages to go beyond a dignified reconnaissance.
