PETER BRODERICK - Three Film Scores Intakes

2010 (Schedios)
modern classical

The prolific Peter Broderick kicks off his 2010 output with a 3'' CD released in a mere two hundred copies by the new English label Schedios, run by Clem Leek, which has already caught the attention of post-classical minimalism fans through two EPs by Leek himself and the excellent pianist Anna Rose Carter.

The "Three Film Scores Intakes" gathered on this mini-CD, running just under a quarter of an hour, follow the same conceptual path that guided "Five Film Score Outtakes", released last year by Bologna's Secret Furry Hole, finding the Danish-born artist grappling once again with all the essential pillars of his music: piano, strings and field recordings.

Despite the minimal scale of the release, "Three Film Scores Intakes" confirms the gradual thickening of Broderick's compositional approach, already evident in his collaboration with Machinefabriek and particularly clear here in the interplay of violin undertones and the stretched-out piano cadences of the first part. Onto this skeleton, in the two subsequent parts, are grafted first the emotional charge of the strings and then the heightened melodic grandeur of the piano, all of it, as ever, studded with crackling samples, noise fragments and ambient openings.

Little more than a further showcase for Broderick's cinematic qualities, but also an intriguing preview of the next steps of an artist who, despite his young age, grows ever more sensitive and mature.
