Trentemøller will release his new self-titled album on November 13th, the first in his career in which all ten songs feature vocals. Written, produced, played and mixed entirely by the Danish musician, the record will come out on his own label In My Room, two years after “Dreamweaver“.
Leading the way is “Terrified”, sung by Jonas Bjerre of Mew and described by Trentemøller as “probably the poppiest song on the album” (you can listen to it below). Amid layered guitars, luminous keyboards and synthetic rhythms, the track introduces a work in which electronic music, dream-pop, shoegaze and noise rock meet in a more immediate form, without giving up on distortion.
“The noisy has become even noisier, the dreamy even dreamier, the melodic even more melodic”, says the Danish artist. “I was ruthless this time. If a track didn't give me a feeling of freedom, a longing to travel, sadness, love, or that pure “I don't give a damn” feeling, it was out”.
The guest vocalists are Anika, Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes, Midwife, Tan Cologne, Emma Acs, Sakura and Bjerre himself. “I knew from the very start exactly who I wanted singing on these songs: people I deeply respect and whom I already heard in my music, friends and some I'd never worked with before”, explains Trentemøller. “I'm actually quite shy, and that gave the singers the privacy they needed to really open up”.
The vocal recordings were done remotely, often in the performers' own homes. “We never met in the studio. Everything was exchanged remotely. For me it worked perfectly”. On “Visceral”, Sakura sings over a landscape of guitars and textures evoking jet engines; “Your Love Walks Alone”, entrusted to Sune Rose Wagner, sinks instead into a heavy blanket of industrial fuzz. “Johnny Boy” finds Anika bending her Sprechgesang to a kraut-rock backdrop, while “Halved”, featuring Midwife, moves between melodic fragility and nocturnal atmospheres.
“Coyote”, propelled by synths, feedback and abrasive guitars, is the only song on the album for which Trentemøller personally wrote the lyrics. “It's that feeling of getting close to someone and discovering that closeness made you love that person less, not more”, he explains.
“I've never been very good at being told what to do”, the musician adds. “I don't really follow trends and I don't think in terms of algorithms”. And live, he intends to present the new work in full: “For the first time ever I'll play the whole record, from start to finish. Every single song”.
