Tom Waits returns with “The Fly”, a new spoken word track, available from today on all streaming platforms. The track is the B-side of “Boots On The Ground”, the single released in collaboration with Massive Attack earlier this year, which marked Waits' recorded return with his first original material since “Bad As Me“, the album released in 2011.
On “The Fly”, the American singer-songwriter gives voice to his unmistakably surreal imagination with an ironic ode to the common housefly. Through lyrics steeped in sarcasm and black humor, Waits celebrates the insect's brief existence, turning it into the protagonist of a satire on human frailty. The track comes with a lyric video illustrated by Casey Waits (you can watch it below).
Introducing the new single, Waits said: "Today, as in all of humanity's yesterdays, this kind of song will never go out of style. Man's follies and endless failures are a banquet for flies. That's why the B-side of the upcoming Massive Attack 12-inch, 'The Fly', is my tribute to this pesky winged insect".
"The Fly" and "Boots On The Ground" will also be released on a 12-inch vinyl out on September 4th. The edition will be produced using the eco-friendly EcoSonic manufacturing process, developed to reduce the environmental impact of record production, and will be available on 180-gram vinyl in red, white and blue, distributed at random.
The release will also serve a charitable purpose: proceeds earmarked for Massive Attack and the Waits/Brennan team will be donated to organisations working in defence of civil rights.
