To celebrate half a century of Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' history, a return to their roots. On November 6th, “Origins 1971-1978” will be released, a massive archival project devoted to the years before the commercial breakthrough of “Damn The Torpedoes”, when Tom Petty was still shaping his own identity between his time with Mudcrutch and the birth of the Heartbreakers.
The collection traces the first eight years of Petty's career through 51 tracks, 27 of them previously unreleased, including unheard recordings, rarities, live performances and extended versions. It's a journey that highlights the sheer variety of musical influences he absorbed in that period, from country to folk, from rock to soul, right through to punk and reggae leanings, documenting the gradual sharpening of a sound destined to become instantly recognizable. All the material has been remixed by Ryan Ulyate from the original multitrack tapes.
No Sleep Til L.A.

At the heart of the project is “No Sleep Til L.A.”, a collection of twelve tracks that traces the transition from the early Mudcrutch to the formation of the Heartbreakers. Seven tracks are entirely previously unreleased, while five come from rare recordings presented in new mixes. Among the never-before-heard pieces are the Heartbreakers' “Parade Of Loons” and “Sin City”, as well as “Unheard Of Kind Of Hero” and “Satisfy Yourself”; also included are some of Mudcrutch's earliest recordings, among them “Up In Mississippi Tonight”, “Depot Street” and “Wild Eyes”.
“Parade Of Loons”, recorded in 1978 and until now left in the vaults, was chosen to preview the project. The track is accompanied by a video directed by Peter Sluszka starring Iain Armitage, known for the series “Young Sheldon”.
“Origins 1971-1978” also includes the 50th-anniversary editions of the band's first two albums, “Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers” and “You're Gonna Get It!”, the concert recording “Live From The Record Plant 1977” and “The Cut Out Bin”, a collection of five further rarities. Rounding out the set is the band's 1978 appearance on the BBC show “The Old Grey Whistle Test”, restored in high definition.
The deluxe vinyl edition includes five 180-gram LPs: “No Sleep Til L.A.”, “Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers (50th Anniversary Edition)”, “You're Gonna Get It! (50th Anniversary Edition)”, “Live From The Record Plant 1977” and “The Cut Out Bin”. The CD version spreads the same material across four discs, combining “No Sleep Til L.A.” and “The Cut Out Bin” on the first one.
Both box sets also include the DVD featuring the “Old Grey Whistle Test” appearance, a Blu-ray Audio disc with hi-res stereo, Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes, plus an 88-page fanzine with archival photographs, memorabilia and contributions from David Fricke, Bud Scoppa and Bob Harris. The package is rounded out with posters, stickers, collectible postcards and a patch featuring the band's logo.
“No Sleep Til L.A.” will also be available separately on CD and in three vinyl editions: 180-gram black, and a colored version exclusive to independent record stores.
