The Church: new album on the way from the band behind “Under A Milky Way” – Listen to “Western”

19-09-2026

More than forty years into their journey, Church are still expanding their sonic universe. The veteran Australian band will release their new album “Lacuna” on October 30 via Cooking Vinyl, preceded by the single “Western”, backed with the B-side “Martian Skyline”.
“Western” draws on Steve Kilbey's childhood memories, and specifically on the TV westerns the bassist, singer and band founder used to watch as a kid. Kilbey describes the song as “a story with no beginning or end that jumps from one place to another, carefree and uncomplicated”. He adds: “As a kid, TV was nothing but westerns, so I just let it all soak in, and this is what came out”.

The track follows "Sacred Echoes (Part Two)", released on November 7, 2025, offering another preview of "Lacuna". The album promises to once again explore the territory that made the band famous with "Under A Milky Way", moving between neo-psychedelia, dream-pop and layered guitar work, underpinned by a hypnotic rhythm section and Kilbey's poetic, metaphysical, enigmatic lyrics.
According to the press notes, "Lacuna" is conceived as an object to be discovered gradually: an intricate construction in which melodies, guitars and words unfold little by little, revealing hidden meanings and new shades with every listen. Another milestone in the long journey of a band that has made atmospheric exploration and psychedelic contamination two of its defining traits. Below is the album's tracklist.
