System Of A Down: "Toxicity" gets a special new edition for its 25th anniversary

10-09-2026

System Of A Down are celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Toxicity” with a new special edition of the album, arriving on November 20, 2026 on CD and vinyl. The reissue will be accompanied by a merchandise collection dedicated to one of the defining hard rock records of the early 2000s.

A 2000s classic

Originally released on September 4, 2001, “Toxicity” was the second studio album by the band made up of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan, and it marked their definitive leap in both quality and popularity following their self-titled 1998 debut. The record pushed the band's signature blend of metal, alternative rock, punk, melody and echoes of Armenian tradition, abrupt shifts in tempo, and fiercely political, surreal songwriting to its furthest extreme.
The album features some of System Of A Down's best-known songs, starting with “Chop Suey!”, “Aerials” and the title track “Toxicity”, alongside “Prison Song”, “Deer Dance”, “ATWA” and “Science”. The album was a massive commercial success, topping the US Billboard 200 and cementing the band's status as one of the most popular rock acts of their generation.

The 25th-anniversary reissue

The new CD edition will feature a redesigned cover and a 24-page booklet created specifically for the anniversary. The identification of the hidden track at the end of the album has also changed: the song fans have known for years as “Arto” is now credited under its correct title, “Der Voghormia”, taken from a traditional Armenian spiritual hymn.
The vinyl version, meanwhile, will come in a special colored edition and will include a bonus 7-inch featuring “Johnny”, a track previously available only as a bonus cut on a handful of rare editions of “Toxicity” (listen below).

Anniversary merchandise

For the 25th anniversary of “Toxicity”, the band has also put together an extensive merchandise collection: T-shirts, hoodies, skateboards, caps, ashtrays and other items inspired by the album's imagery. Among the curiosities is a reproduction of the T-shirt handed out exclusively to attendees of the party held to launch the album back in 2001, an event that was cut short after police intervened. There's no shortage of playful nods to the songs either, such as earrings shaped like Chinese takeout containers inspired by “Chop Suey!”.
A quarter of a century after its release, “Toxicity” remains the album that cemented System Of A Down's international breakthrough and one of the records that best captured the transformation of metal in the early 2000s, blending aggression, melody, experimentation and cultural identity into a formula that no other band has ever quite managed to replicate.
