Soft Cell will bring their recording career to a definitive close with one final album. Just over a year after the death of Dave Ball, the veteran multi-instrumentalist and creative other half of the British duo, Marc Almond has announced the release of "Danceteria", due out on September 25th. The record will be the final chapter in the career of the British act who topped international charts in 1981 with "Tainted Love". The album has been previewed by its title-track single, offering a first taste of a project conceived as a definitive farewell to the Soft Cell story.
In a statement, Almond explained the meaning behind the title and the record: "'Danceteria' is a love letter to New York in the early '80s. Our time in New York, where we recorded our first three albums, shaped us both as artists and as people. Celebrating that period is a fitting farewell to Dave Ball and to Soft Cell's final studio album."
The singer also made clear there is no possibility of carrying the project forward without his longtime partner: "There can be no more Soft Cell recordings without Dave, it would be impossible. The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and regardless of live performances, I can't write Soft Cell songs without him."
The album, which will feature 12 new tracks (plus 2 bonus tracks on the CD edition), is effectively a tribute to Dave Ball himself, who completed it two days before his death.
With "Danceteria", one of the most influential chapters in British synth-pop comes to a close, an adventure that began in the late '70s and went on to become a touchstone of electronic music thanks to hits like "Tainted Love", "Bedsitter" and "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye", and to their landmark LP Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.
