Richard Lloyd, legendary guitarist of Television and a key figure on a landmark album like “Marquee Moon“, is battling cancer. To help him cover medical and everyday expenses, Sean Seymour, bassist of the Richard Lloyd Group, has launched the fundraiser Help Richard Lloyd Fight Cancer on the GoFundMe platform.
In March 2026 the musician was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile ducts that has also affected his liver. “Due to its location, doctors currently cannot safely operate to remove it”, the fundraising page states. Since then, Lloyd has been through an especially harrowing ordeal, with seven intensive-care admissions, two episodes of sepsis, and severe liver and kidney complications. “Despite everything, he keeps fighting”.
His condition – as Rolling Stone reports – prevents him from touring and performing live, which are his main source of income. His wife Sheila has also had to stop working in order to care for him full-time. The situation is made even harder by some unresolved royalty issues dating back about two years, on top of the substantial medical bills and ordinary living costs.
The campaign was launched to support the couple through the treatment. “I'm usually pretty optimistic and I'm facing the situation with serenity, but doing it alone has become very hard and we're running short on money,” Lloyd wrote. “That's why I'm asking for your help. If you can afford to make a donation, please do. Otherwise, please share this message with your friends who might be able to help me, and with people who know me.”
The fundraiser's goal is $80,000. So far, more than 500 people have already donated around $47,000.
The story of Television came to an end on January 28, 2023, with the death of frontman Tom Verlaine; last February 5, bassist Fred Smith also left us.
