After weeks of hints, red herrings and deliberately cryptic teasers, Queens Of The Stone Age have officially announced their ninth studio album. It will be titled “Perfecth” and will be released on October 30, three years after “In Times New Roman…“. Alongside the news, a new single has also arrived, “Insignificant Other” (listen below).
As is often the case with Josh Homme's band, the road to the announcement was anything but straightforward. In the first teaser, Homme and Dean Fertita were sitting at a table playing five-finger fillet, the dangerous game that involves rapidly stabbing a knife into the gaps between your fingers. Asked about the album's release date, the frontman replied: "September 30th, I think." Shortly after, the knife landed on his hand, the scene turned splatter, and the title "Perfecth" appeared on screen along with the same date, which was immediately crossed out and replaced with a more cautious "coming soon".
September 30th thus turned out to be a red herring. The correct date is October 30, and the curious added "h" in "perfect" has finally been explained too. According to Homme, nothing in the world is truly perfect, but everything can appear "perfecth": a distortion that sums up the spirit of the album and its relationship with imperfection.
Produced by Josh Homme together with bassist Michael Shuman and born out of sessions held in different locations, the album draws inspiration from kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics by fusing the cracks with gold. The break is therefore not hidden, but turned into something precious and unrepeatable. A metaphor reflected in the album's nine songs, dedicated to the many forms of love: family love, love for friends, desire, and the bonds capable of leaving deep wounds. "Every song seems to come from a different world. And that's intentional, because it's an attempt to stitch together all those emotions that revolve around love, lust, madness, and the kind of wisdom" that comes as a consequence of all that, Homme explained.
The first taste of “Perfecth” came in July with “Easy Street” (video below), a track made together with Nikki Lane and accompanied by a video steeped in Queens Of The Stone Age's usual surreal humour. Now it's the turn of “Insignificant Other”, a title that had already appeared in the end credits of the film “Alive In The Catacombs”. The song had thus fuelled fan speculation before finally finding an official home on the new album. “It's a song about distance, about how a person can be your whole world and then just vanish, and that strange vertigo you feel when it happens,” Homme explained.
“Perfecth” arrives at the end of a particularly intense and difficult period for the frontman. Back in 2024, Homme had already said he didn't want to repeat the long gap between “Villains“, released in 2017, and “In Times New Roman…“, but his health problems forced the band to cancel a substantial part of the tour. The musician later revealed that he spent around seven months bedridden after surgery, going through a difficult period that was compounded by the recording sessions in the Paris Catacombs.
That experience gave rise to the film and EP “Alive In The Catacombs“, followed by the Catacombs Tour. Now “Perfecth” seems to turn those wounds into new creative material, much like the concept of kintsugi: nine different fragments pieced back together into a work that doesn't erase its own fractures, but rather puts them on display.
In the coming weeks the band will also announce dates for their 2027 headline tour.
