Ten years after the passing of Prince, a new piece of evidence of his studio work has surfaced from the archives: the previously unreleased recording of "With This Tear", cut in November 1991 at the Paisley Park Studios complex. It's a version played entirely by the musician himself, who, as was often the case in his work at the time, handled every instrumental part in person.
The track, later remixed and remastered by Chris James — already involved in the "HITnRUN Phase Two", "Art Official Age" and "Plectrumelectrum" projects — offers a precise picture of Prince's working method in the early Nineties: self-produced, total control over the sound, and songwriting also conceived with other performers in mind. "With This Tear" was in fact written for Céline Dion, who included it on her self-titled 1992 album. The new release thus allows for a comparison between two distinct approaches: on one hand, the polished, structured vocal interpretation by the Canadian singer, and on the other, a more essential version, built directly in the studio by its author: listen to both versions of the track below.
The release kicks off a series of previously unreleased material that will be published throughout the year, as part of a program dedicated to showcasing the artist's archive. The initiative is part of the anniversary celebrations, which include the annual "A Day 2 Reflect | A Night 2 Remember" event at Paisley Park and, from June 3 to 7 between Minneapolis and the same complex, the "10th Anniversary Celebration of Life" event.
