Morrissey's recording comeback takes shape with “Notre-Dame”, the new single taken from the album “Make-Up Is A Lie”, due out on March 6, 2026 via Sire/Warner Records. Built on dark, restrained synth-rock, the song draws inspiration from the fire that devastated Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 15, 2019. In the lyrics, Morrissey sings: “Notre-Dame, we know who tried to kill you”, followed by “Notre-Dame, we will not be silent”. Compared to the live versions performed so far, the studio edition introduces a significant change to one of the most discussed passages: the line “Before investigations/ They said, ‘It’s not terrorism'” is replaced with “Before investigations/ They said, ‘There’s nothing to see here'”, softening the direct reference to theories of a terrorist motive.

The new album
“Notre-Dame” follows the lead single “Make-Up Is a Lie” and precedes the identically-titled album, Morrissey's fourteenth solo effort and his first in over five years of recording silence since “I Am Not A Dog On A Chain”. The record also marks the singer's return to a historic major-label home, following his friction with Capitol Records and the end of his deal with BMG.
“Make-Up Is A Lie” was recorded at Studio La Fabrique in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the south of France, produced by Joe Chiccarelli. The album features poetic, provocative lyrics, spare but varied arrangements, and a title that evokes an idea of direct, unmediated exposure.
On the record Morrissey is joined by regular members of his backing band, including Jesse Tobias, Camila Grey, Carmen Vandenberg, Juan Galeano, Alain Whyte, Gustavo Manzur and Brendan Buckley. The tracklist includes songs the artist has mentioned in the past, brand-new material, and a cover of Amazona by Roxy Music, taken from their 1973 album.
"Make-Up Is A Lie" will be available in both digital and physical formats. The vinyl will be released in three variants: blue, red, and Zoetrope picture disc.
