Morrissey has announced the release of his fourteenth solo album, “Make-Up Is A Lie”, due out on March 6th. The record will be released by Sire/Warner Records and marks the English artist's return to the label after more than five years away. The title track, “Make-Up Is a Lie”, is out now. The single previews a twelve-track album, whose full tracklist has also been released. You can listen to it below.
The opening single was co-written with Camila Grey and is built on a rhythmic structure reminiscent of trip-hop, with deep drums, a prominent bassline and a suspended atmosphere, before opening up into a dream-pop-tinged chorus. The lyrics tell of a female figure insisting on delivering a message even beyond death:
Ten years passed in boredom I made my way to Paris
to stand before her gravestone I read the words in granite
One. two.
Three. Four. Five.
Make-up is a lie! All make-up, make-up is a lie!
The release comes amid the ongoing world tour, which has already taken in the United States, Canada, the UK and Europe. The new run of dates will resume in January and will include an Italian date on March 9th at the Fabrique in Milan.
“Make-Up Is A Lie” was recorded at Studio La Fabrique in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the south of France, produced by Joe Chiccarelli. The album features poetic, provocative lyrics, spare but varied arrangements, and a title that evokes an idea of direct, unmediated exposure.
On the record, Morrissey is joined by regular musicians from his entourage, including Jesse Tobias, Camila Grey, Carmen Vandenberg, Juan Galeano, Alain Whyte, Gustavo Manzur and Brendan Buckley. The tracklist includes songs the artist has referenced in the past, brand-new material, and a cover of Amazona by Roxy Music, taken from their 1973 album.
