Morrissey: new album announcement expected on January 9. Said to be titled “You’re Right, It’s Time”

07-01-2026

After months of rumours and delays, Morrissey is officially gearing up to return with a new solo album, his first since 2020. The announcement is expected on January 9th, a date that surfaced in the past few hours on the English artist's social media channels alongside the Sire Records logo, with no further explanation but a fairly explicit message for fans. The record is set to be the fourteenth of the former Smiths frontman's solo career, and would mark the end of a long recording hiatus that began after "I Am Not a Dog On A Chain", released 5 years ago.

According to information that has emerged so far, the album will be released on Sire Records, the label with which Morrissey has just signed a new deal following his split from Bmg and the deal with Capitol that never materialized. The most widely reported title is "You're Right, It's Time," one of two projects the singer has said he's had ready for some time, alongside the repeatedly delayed "Bonfire Of Teenagers."

The new work is expected to consist of twelve tracks and include a cover of Roxy Music's "Amazona" (from the 1973 album "Stranded"), featuring Phil Manzanera on guitar. Still to be confirmed are the release date, the artwork and the possible lead single, details that should be revealed starting with the January 9 announcement.

The anticipation surrounding his musical comeback is, however, intertwined with the usual difficulties tied to the former Smiths man's live activity. In recent days, two shows in California, in Rancho Mirage and San Diego, were cancelled due to an adverse reaction to a prescription medication, according to statements from the venues. The first has been postponed to a date yet to be announced, while no rescheduling has been announced for the second. These are just the latest in a long string of cancellations: nearly half of the shows originally scheduled in recent months failed to take place.

Despite everything, the tour is expected to resume on January 10 in San Antonio, Texas, just twenty-four hours after the new album's announcement. The 2026 calendar remains packed regardless, with numerous dates already confirmed across Europe, including an Italian stop on March 9 at Fabrique in Milan.

Signing a new deal with Sire Records has finally resolved a situation that had been dragging on since December 2022, when Morrissey announced he had "voluntarily" severed all ties with Capitol Records. The decision came as a surprise, given that just two months earlier the same artist had named that very label as the album's official home. Around the same time, Morrissey also revealed that Miley Cyrus had asked for her vocal parts to be removed from the track "I Am Veronica," recorded back in 2020.
