Mogwai: a compilation is coming to celebrate 30 years of the band's career. Listen to the unreleased track “Underground” with Iggy Pop

30-09-2026

Mogwai are marking thirty years together with "Happy Tears", an anthology collection due out on January 8, 2027 via their own Rock Action Records. Alongside the tracks that have charted the Scottish band's history, the compilation will also feature a particularly notable new song: "Underground", made together with Iggy Pop. The collaboration also carries strong symbolic weight for Stuart Braithwaite. In his memoir "Spaceships Over Glasgow", the Mogwai frontman had described how decisive discovering The Stooges' records had been during his teenage years. Decades later, Iggy Pop's voice now enters the band's sound world directly, settling over the dark, massive crescendo of "Underground".

Iggy Pop himself explained that he had always been a fan of Mogwai, and that he was especially struck by the track's opening, in which he recognized a portrayal of "crushing modern loneliness". The vocal part, arranged by Matt Sweeney, felt to him like the perfect vehicle for playing an angry character with no intention of holding back.

"Happy Tears" will trace the different chapters of Mogwai's career, from their earliest work through to their most recent output. The release of the collection will be accompanied by "Happy Tears: The Story Of Mogwai", a long-form audio documentary made with production company Cup & Nuzzle and structured as an oral history of the band. Here is the tracklist for "Happy Tears".
