The ten best albums released so far in 2025 in Mojo magazine's ranking

04-04-2025

With the end of March, the first quarter of 2025 has come to a close. It's been a stretch of the year that has already brought to light several interesting musical proposals, worth noting ahead of the final year-end roundup. The British magazine Mojo has already published a sort of "reminder", selecting what it currently considers the ten unmissable albums released so far this year. Obviously, this is a partial and subjective list, to be taken with a grain of salt and perhaps compared with our 2025 reviews list, complete with ratings from our editorial team.

In any case, here are Mojo's 10 best albums released in 2025 so far (full feature here).

Meanwhile, anticipation is building for the new spring releases. Will the long-awaited new chapter from the Cure also arrive? Robert Smith has given new hints about the follow-up to "Songs Of A Lost World", the Cure's comeback album after 16 years (since "4:13 Dream", 2008), which brought them back to the top of the British charts after 32 years (and to no. 2 in our editorial team's 2024 chart).

During an interview with John Kennedy on Radio X, Smith revealed that he hopes to be able to release the next album "before summer".

During the conversation, the English frontman also revealed what to expect from the record, stating that "there will be a song about grief that wasn't included on this album, a very, very old song that we've been playing for a long time called 'It Can Never Be The Same'. It'll be on the next album because I think the time has come. It used to be called 'Christmas Without You'". Smith also spoke about another song that will appear on the new album, "A Boy I Never Knew", which was originally meant to appear on their self-titled 2004 album. "I think it'll probably end up on the record. It's a sad song, but in a completely different way. It's a song where I sing about a boy who died a million years ago. About the death of humanity before it even began, I think... or something like that", he said about the track.

"In 2019 we recorded 24 songs for what was meant to be a double album, and those eight came out", Smith said, later adding that the new album will "probably have 10 songs".

Regarding the sound of the Cure's next album, Smith added: "There are three songs that are slower than almost anything on this album. So I don't know, it might end up being heavier than this one". Clarifying that the record will arrive "hopefully before summer", Smith then revealed that he is currently "finishing off the project", which still needs to be mixed.

Smith had previously hinted back in October that the Cure would release a trilogy of albums, stating that they had "recorded about 25 or 26 songs in 2019". However, he doesn't want to make plans for the third record until the second is finished: "It'll all be fine this time. Once this one's done, the second one is basically done too. The third is a bit trickier because, well, if we manage to get that far...".
