Melvins and Napalm Death together: the album "Savage Imperial Death March" is out. Listen to the first single

Twelve months after the ultra-limited pressing released by AmRep, "Savage Imperial Death March," the collaboration between Melvins and Napalm Death, is now getting an official edition. The release is set for April on Ipecac Recordings, in CD, digital and vinyl formats. The project had already been the focus of an eponymous tour in 2025, an occasion on which Melvins revived their historic two-drummer lineup with Dale Crover and Coady Willis. That setup hadn't been seen since 2016, back at the time of the first "Savage Imperial Death March Tour." Crover had returned after his 2023 absence due to a medical issue.

The album's title alludes to the horrors of the First World War and offers a reflection on the excesses of imperial powers, evoking the brutality of military strategy and the indifference to human loss.

The new edition features eight tracks, two more than the original version: "Awful Handwriting" and "Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy." The record was recorded in Los Angeles by Melvins (without Willis) alongside three members of Napalm Death: Barney Greenway on vocals, Shane Embury on bass and John Cooke on guitar. The vinyl will be available in four limited-edition variants featuring artwork by Mackie Osborne.

Last year's tour crossed numerous US cities, pairing the double bill with guests such as Dark Sky Burial, Weedeater, Titan To Tachyons (featuring Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle) and The Hard-Ons with Jerry A.

Shane Embury stated: "I've always loved Melvins and their approach to music. Having the chance to make an album of eclectic musical madness with them was truly an honor and a huge amount of fun — which is really the whole point! Let's do another one soon." Buzz Osborne added: "Napalm Death are one of my favorite bands of all time. It was an absolute pleasure and a dream come true to collaborate with them. We wrote the songs together: I'd come up with a riff, we'd learn it and record it on the spot. They'd bring in ideas too, and we'd learn them immediately. It really was a true 50/50 collaboration."
