Marilyn Manson will not be entering the nuns' convent. Ferrara's mayor: "Orders from above"

U-turn in the Marilyn Manson case in Ferrara: the "Reverend" will not be hosted at the convent of the Sisters of San Vincenzo, traditionally used as the backstage area for the Ferrara Summer Festival. Following the media attention sparked by the news, the nuns have decided to end their collaboration.

Ferrara's mayor, Alan Fabbri, weighed in on the matter, attributing the decision to outside pressure: “I lightly stated a particular truth to the press about the Marilyn Manson concert,” he wrote. “Every year, in Piazza Ariostea, artists have been able to rest (even Slipknot) before their performance in the backstage area of the stage, which on these occasions has always been the convent of the Sisters of San Vincenzo. Unfortunately, after all this media attention on the news, the nuns have informed us that they received orders from above – from the Curia, I imagine – to withdraw their support from the whole Ferrara Summer Festival, not just the Marilyn Manson concert. It's a shame,” the mayor added, “and I'm certain the nuns are not at fault, and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank them for the great help they've given us over the years.”

The Diocese was quick to respond, stating that “in this specific matter it not only has nothing to do with it, but has not said a word. The Sisters,” it stressed, “are perfectly capable, within their Order and with their own superiors, of deciding for themselves.” As for the decision regarding the Marilyn Manson concert, “it is clear that it is not considered a choice that can help our young people and our city grow, but rather one that contributes to fostering a distorted view of human relationships and the search for the sacred,” the Diocese writes.

It sounds like a story from a few decades — or centuries — ago, yet this is Italy in 2026…
