Liars have announced their return to recording and to European stages. The band led by Angus Andrew will release “A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans” on March 5, 2027, the eleventh album of their career and their first studio work in almost six years since “The Apple Drop“. The record will come out via Mute Records and is preceded by the single “Ice Pick, Kalamazoo” (listen below), which introduces some of the themes set to define the new work.
The new album is rooted in an experience Andrew lived through firsthand after relocating to Kalamazoo, Michigan, with his wife and daughter. Shortly after his arrival, the musician found himself dealing with a serious pollution problem caused by a local packaging factory, responsible for releasing hydrogen sulfide and other harmful substances into the air. The situation became so severe that the state health department advised residents to stay in their homes. Andrew then took part in a campaign demanding that the company be held accountable, clashing with a complex web of corporate interests, environmental damage and institutional inertia. That experience ended up feeding into the new Liars material, turning frustration and bureaucratic absurdity into musical substance.
“You get so used to something that you lose all perception of it”, Andrew explained. This very idea forms one of the cores of “A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans”: the way injustices and distortions can gradually become part of the everyday landscape, to the point of almost going unnoticed. Even the album's title stems from a real situation. In Michigan there is in fact a law that prevents local governments from banning single-use plastic bags: a legislative paradox that, in Andrew's eyes, perfectly sums up the contradictions he encountered during his time in the American state.
Ahead of the album's release, Liars will also return to perform in Europe for the first time in ten years. The tour will include an Italian date as well: the band will play on Monday, October 5, 2026 at Arci Bellezza in Milan. Tickets will be available from September 11 at a price of 19.90 euros.

The Liars project confirms it was born under a lucky star, a child of the most fertile New York art-rock scene captured by Scott Crary in "Kill Your Idols" (2004), where the young Liars – alongside Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Black Dice – are placed alongside and associated with champions of that Year Zero signed by no wave such as Lydia Lunch, Arto Lindsay and Glenn Branca. Few artists can still surprise like this after twenty years of career.
