Almost four years after “The Bible”, Lambchop announce their return with a new album. “Punching The Clown” will be released on August 21st via City Slang/Merge Records, marking the seventeenth chapter in the long trajectory led by Kurt Wagner. The record was produced by Ryan Olson, already known for his work with Poliça and Gayngs, and also features contributions from Bon Iver on banjo alongside a six-voice choir.
Wagner has said the initial spark came about by chance, during a car ride in early 2024, when he heard a song on the radio built around a simple banjo chord and a few choral voices. That moment sparked a deeper exploration that led him to discover "lined out singing," a form of gospel singing with Scottish origins that later developed within Appalachian tradition: a spontaneous, a cappella vocal practice based on a dialogue between a lead voice and a choir. It's precisely that stripped-back, collective quality that shaped the approach behind the new record.
The album is preceded by the single "Weakened," now available to stream: you can listen to it below.
