Kristin Hersh has shared “Moths”, the new single previewing “Sugar On Blackstone”, her forthcoming solo album, out September 18th on Fire Records. The song revolves around the theme of inspiration and the difficulty of recognizing it in a world dominated by distractions. Hersh describes its meaning as follows: “We're dazed by distractions and don't always value focus, when inspiration crosses the road ahead of us and we keep on driving. We were never Icarus, no illusions of grandeur, just innocents before whatever comes next. And yet we remain enchanted by that glow, the flame that burns the wings. So what do we do? We ask the sky and keep driving, calling it love, like moths to the light”.
The new album will also feature the previously released singles "Dark Eyed Junco" and "Sundial."
“Sugar On Blackstone” promises to be a work that's both dark and luminous, intimate and essential, in which the legendary voice of Throwing Muses, a key figure on the American independent scene since the 80s, returns to grapple with some of the central themes of her songwriting. Life and death, wealth and poverty, memory and loss intertwine with small childhood episodes that continue to echo into adulthood. At the heart of the record are above all the bonds that endure through time: those with musicians, family and friends, but also the evocative power of sounds and places, capable of suddenly bringing back distant people and moments.
Recorded at Stable Sound Studios, “Sugar On Blackstone” sees Hersh joined by two longtime collaborators: Rob Ahlers of 50FOOTWAVE on drums and Pete Harvey of Throwing Muses on cello. The stripped-back instrumentation helps create a warm, intimate sound, balanced between fragility and strength, delicacy and tension. Providence, Rhode Island also plays an important role, the setting of Hersh's childhood and the starting point for a reflection on home, memory and uprootedness. Streets and parks from the past become symbolic places marked by grief, survival and resilience. Layered over these images are others of constant travel, fires and journeys across America, fueling a sense of unease that coexists with unexpected moments of tenderness.
With “Sugar On Blackstone”, Kristin Hersh thus adds a new chapter to her long solo career, continuing to transform memory and personal experience into writing that is intense, spare and deeply emotional.
