More than 45 years after the end of Joy Division, their archive continues to yield fragments of a story as brief as it is inexhaustible. To mark the band's fiftieth anniversary and their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, September 25 will see the release of "Eternal (Live)", a monumental box set that for the first time attempts to organically reconstruct the live activity of Ian Curtis's group. The project was also conceived with the intention of bringing order to a legacy that for decades circulated mainly through bootlegs of wildly varying quality. Stephen Morris recalls how, after Curtis's death and the surviving members' transformation into New Order, the release of "Still" in 1981 seemed destined to close the books on the past for good. "We thought that was it," the drummer recalls today. "It was a way of closing that chapter, like: thanks, there'll be nothing more after this. That was naive, because something always turns up somewhere."
Joy Division live across 14 CDs and 2 DVDs
And indeed a great deal has turned up. Over the years there have been compilations, BBC recordings, Peel Sessions, concerts and expanded editions of "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer", while alongside all this an underground market of audience-recorded tapes kept thriving. "Eternal (Live)" also stems from a desire to reclaim that material at its source: wherever possible the original cassettes were tracked down and handed over to the engineers at Abbey Road Studios for a restoration and sound-enhancement job inevitably shaped by the quality of the source recordings.
The result spans 14 CDs and 2 DVDs and includes sixteen concerts recorded between 1979 and 1980, making it the broadest official portrait yet devoted to Joy Division's live dimension. This is not, then, a collection built solely from the best professional recordings, but a kind of vast documentary archive, in which different sources coexist, some of them technically imperfect. It is precisely this variety, though, that lets you trace almost from the inside the evolution of a band that, in a remarkably short span, transformed its lean, nervy post-punk into music that grew ever darker, more spacious and more obsessive.
What's new in the project
Among the main new additions are two previously unreleased concerts, recorded at the Hope And Anchor and the Acklam Hall in London, along with three never-before-released recordings from the Factory in Manchester, the Lyceum and the Moonlight Club in London. The box also includes performances that have already entered the band's mythology, such as the December 18, 1979 show at Les Bains Douches in Paris, from which a new live version of “Transmission” has been drawn.
The journey runs up to May 2, 1980, when Joy Division took the stage at Birmingham's High Hall for what would become their final concert. Ian Curtis would die sixteen days later. That evening also preserves a unique document: the only live performance by Joy Division of "Ceremony", the song destined to become New Order's debut single in 1981.
Alongside the audio material come two DVDs offering more than two and a half hours of footage. Among the most significant documents is the complete release of the Plan K concert in Brussels, never before shown in full and presented both with the original 1979 audio and with a reconstruction made in 2026. The second DVD instead recovers two complete performances and a soundcheck at Manchester's Apollo Theatre in October 1979: material of which only a few fragments had previously been released on VHS in 1982. Rounding out the video portion is a newly restored version of "Joy Division – A Malcolm Whitehead Film".
"Eternal (Live)" thus takes on the proportions of an almost definitive archive of Joy Division's life on stage: not a mere anthology of their best shows, but the mapping of a trajectory that lasted only a very short time and has since become one of the founding chapters of post-punk. It is also a way of bringing back into the official discography dozens of recordings that for decades fed the bootleg circuit.
