On 6 September, "Luck And Strange", the new album by David Gilmour, will be released digitally and on vinyl and CD. It contains eight new tracks, as well as a reworking of "Between Two Points" by the Montgolfier Brothers, and features artwork and photography by renowned artist Anton Corbijn. The album's cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by lyrics written by Charlie Gilmour for the album's closing track, "Scattered". Recorded over five months in Brighton and London, it was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, the British producer known for his work with artists of the calibre of Marika Hackman and ALT-J. Most of the album's lyrics were written by Polly Samson, Gilmour's co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years.
"'Luck And Strange' deals with life by focusing on ageing," Polly Samson explained. "The theme of mortality is a constant presence. Working with Charlie Andrew was liberating - he wants to know what the songs are about, and he wants everyone playing them to have a clear understanding of the lyrics and to let that understanding shape the way they play. I loved him for that in particular."
"Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years," says Gilmour. "The live streams of 'Von Trapped' showed the fantastic fusion between Romany's voice and the sound of the harp. That made us feel able to cast off some of the past I'd been tied to and to drop every rule in order to do whatever I felt like doing. It was a great joy."
"Luck And Strange" features David Gilmour collaborating with Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert (bass), Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao (drums), Rob Gentry and Roger Eno (keyboards) and Will Gardner (choir and string arrangements). The title track also features the late Rick Wright, the Pink Floyd keyboardist who passed away in 2008. It's a part recorded in 2007, during a session in a barn at Gilmour's home.
