After two years of research, writing and pre-production, Cinelicious and Covo Club have announced the end of filming for the documentary on the historic Bologna venue and are launching a crowdfunding campaign to finance the editing and post-production phase.

“IL COVO” is the title of the documentary that tells the story of the birth, life and miracles of one of Europe's longest-running temples of live music, open and continuously operating since 1980 on Viale Zagabria (and we want it to stay that way), of a community, of two teenagers who took on international drug trafficking with two speakers and a guitar. Straddling the Cold War and punk, Covo Club has existed and endured for nearly half a century.
The film will also feature invaluable testimonies from big names in music, including Cesare Cremonini, Samuel of Subsonica and Nick McCarthy, former bassist and founding member of Franz Ferdinand. Countless great artists, in fact, passed through Covo early in their careers, from XX to Charli XCX, as well as Libertines, Stereolab, Mogwai, Shame, Idles, Maruja and many others.
Directing is Claudia Mastroroberto, a young Bolognese filmmaker and documentarian who, among her various experiences, has worked with Carlo Lucarelli as a writer for Sky, on the editorial staff of the Prime Video series “Veleno”, winner of the 2021 Gold Globe, and has exhibited her films at venues such as the Manifesta12 art biennial and Art City 2026. In 2023 she founded Cinelicious, a young, entirely female-led independent outfit, together with Alice Solinas, who handles production, joined on this project by Marcella Gasche, a writer with extensive experience in documentary work, especially at international level, and also one of the writers of the series “Veleno”.
At a moment in history when small clubs, social centres and the most community-driven gathering places are struggling hard to keep their projects going, it is now more essential than ever to tell a story like that of Covo, which for 45 years has kept alive an almost unique reality in Italy — one that touches countless bands, countless music lovers, and simply countless loves and friendships born under a stage, on a dancefloor, or just at the bar of the neighbourhood venue.
