Ultimate Classic Rock's ranking of the 50 greatest American rock songs of all time

17-02-2026

This time Ultimate Classic Rock magazine has definitely aimed high (too high?), compiling, in its new ranking, an ambitious - and extremely tricky - list of the fifty greatest American rock songs of all time. "The 50 best American rock songs don't necessarily scream 'U.S.A.! U.S.A.!', but for most of the artists included there's no doubt about their origin," notes Michael Gallucci in the introduction. "The tracks selected by the UCR staff trace rock's genuine coming-of-age across the decades: from the pioneers of the Fifties to the revolutions of the Sixties and Seventies, all the way to later developments. The Summer of Love, punk and the rise of alternative rock in the Nineties all find room in these choices. The story traces American music from the second half of the twentieth century through its great cities, its suburbs and everything in between. The artists and songs listed have helped shape the cultural landscape over the years and, decades later, still resonate with the same force they had upon release."
