Written off or considered endangered several decades ago, progressive rock keeps proving itself alive and impervious to expiration dates. The online magazine Louder has thus decided to dedicate a special year-end list to the venerable genre: the top 50 prog albums of 2025. Naturally, as is always the case when talking about prog, one has to reckon with rather loose and subjective takes on what the term actually means, which in some cases might not be entirely convincing. But the main goal, once again, is to provide a useful guide for digging through the most interesting new releases of the past year. "What an incredible year 2025 has been for the world of prog," Louder writes in its introduction, "This time we've taken a different approach to our Critics' Choice: instead of publishing each contributor's individual Top 20, we've merged them together to create one definitive Top 50."
So here is the list of the 50 best prog albums of 2025 according to Louder magazine (full feature here).
