Apparat, Mace, Populous, Nziria and Voices From The Lake among the headliners at Rome's Videocittà. Full schedule inside.

07-07-2026

Now in its ninth edition, Videocittà returns to Rome from July 10 to 12: the Festival of Vision and Digital Culture conceived by Francesco Rutelli, with artistic direction by Anna Lea Antolini and creative direction by Michele Lotti, and the support of Eni, the event's main partner. Light installations, immersive and interactive experiences, Virtual Reality, video art, A/V live sets and DJ sets, talks and performances will once again bring to life the Gazometro in Rome, the largest area of urban industrial archaeology in Europe.

Having devoted previous editions to the Moon, the Earth, the Galaxy and the Sun, Videocittà 2026 chooses water as its central theme: the origin of life, an essential resource and a universal symbol capable of crossing cultures, landscapes and imaginations, while also serving as a key to reflecting on today's great urgencies. The festival's entire programme, from installations to audiovisual live sets, from immersive works to talks, right down to the name of this edition — Videocittà Watercult 2026 — declines the theme of water into different forms and languages, inviting audiences to reflect on its ecological, political and cultural value as a living, ever-changing and universal element.

Among the new additions to this edition is the arrival of German composer, musician and producer Apparat. At Videocittà 2026, the artist — winner of the David di Donatello for Best Original Score for Mario Martone's Capri-Revolution, Grammy nominee for the album LP5, and composer of the music for the cult series Dark — will take part in a special double appearance: his iconic track Black Water, reworked in a new version made for the track's fifteenth anniversary, will become part of In Lympha, the major immersive installation conceived and produced by Eni in collaboration with Videocittà, which will take over the spaces of Opificio 41 for the duration of the Festival, interpreting water as origin and generative principle: that which nourishes, sets in motion, and from which every form evolves and expands. Added to this is a special DJ set scheduled for Saturday 11 July on the Gazometro Main Stage, designed specifically for Videocittà and conceived as a space of total artistic and expressive freedom spanning electronic music, ambient and experimentation.

And then there's UNDA, the new site-specific light installation produced by Eni for Videocittà and conceived by Visioni Parallele and Niulab, with executive production by Eventitaliani. For the first time, the Gazometro G4 is transformed into a work visible exclusively from the outside, becoming a new beacon of light within the Capital's urban landscape. Through a composition of light and lasers inspired by the perpetual motion of water, UNDA reinterprets one of the most iconic symbols of contemporary industrial archaeology, turning it into an urban lighthouse in constant metamorphosis. A flow of luminous waves runs through the structure, evoking the rhythm of the sea and its power to shape landscapes over time.

The central Gazometro of the three smaller gazometers, known as G2, becomes a space connecting images, technology and live performance, once again under the sign of water. Images of oceans, rivers and rainfall from around the world shape the immersive, multidisciplinary installation Water: always the same, always different, bringing together the research of Giuseppe La Spada – an Italian artist whose collaborations range from Ryuichi Sakamoto to Franco Battiato – the sounds of Francesca Heart, and the physical research of Brazilian performer Amanda Lana.

Making its first appearance at the festival is Cao Yuxi, a Chinese artist among the most significant figures on the contemporary scene, who presents the Italian premiere of his celebrated immersive installation Nature's Computility: an enveloping waterfall that, through the use of algorithms, decodes the beauty of nature and renders the flow of water in dynamic, ultra-high-resolution visualisations. Cao Yuxi's work is perfectly attuned to the space hosting it: Opificio 60 Nord – which Videocittà is able to use thanks to its collaboration as experience partner with eFM, a leading international platform company in digital Real Estate and co-founder of ROAD, which is opening its new space to the public for the first time: a PlaceTech Lab traversed by different realities and languages – art, technology, innovation, research – capable of generating experiences, and therefore value.

The audio-visual music section translates water into sonic and visual experience, with a main stage conceived as a hybrid between installation and performance space, and a line-up featuring some of the most authoritative names on the electronic scene. 10 July opens with Sara Persico and Mika Oki, winners of the Videocittà Awards 2025 in the AV performance category, for a live set blending experimental electronics, sound art and radical vocality. Next up is Mace, one of the most influential producers on the contemporary Italian music scene, who after two sold-out shows at the Forum and a recent appearance at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, brings to Videocittà an audiovisual DJ set built together with Sugo Design, translating sound into landscape and vision. It's an immersive experience in which nature and spiritual dimension merge, where organic imagery, visual flows and sonic textures interact in real time, shaping a sensory narrative. On 11 July the programme continues with Nziria, singer, producer and performer born in Ravenna to Neapolitan roots. The artist performs live Syysma, her new album straddling Neomelodico Napoletano, hardcore gabber and contemporary club culture. Next is Populous live with visuals by Furio Ganz, presenting the album Isla Diferente, written on Lanzarote, a mysterious, archaic island where the silence of volcanoes meets the ocean; Apparat closes out the evening. On 12 July the main stage will be dedicated to the project by Donato Dozzy and Neel: Voices From The Lake, through which the two Italian artists explore experimental sonic worlds evoking underwater dimensions and shaped by nature, along with the new AV live show by transmedia studio Liminal State devoted to water: FREEFALL, an audiovisual performance of live improvisation in which sound, music, lighting and generative visuals unfold in real time, exploring freefall as a space of freedom.

One of the festival's most beloved fixtures returns: the virtual reality experiences. Amid natural and liquid landscapes, at the Amphitheatre, audiences will witness the world premiere of In Pinus, an all-Italian VR experience about the domestic pine tree, produced by Impersive for Videocittà in collaboration with the Presidential Estate of Castelporziano as part of the European project CO-VISION, directed by Guido Geminiani, featuring performer Delfina Stella, with text by Simone Arcagni and music by Vincenzo Pizzi. And again, on the first floor of G3, the largest of the smaller gasometers, comes L'acqua in virtual reality, a corpus of four VR experiences – Jellyfish by French artist Mélodie Mousset, Biolum by French artist Abel Kohen, Plastisapiens by Canadian artists Edith Jorisch and Miri Chekhanovich, The world came flooding in by Australian artists Van Sowerwine and Isobel Knowles – presented in their Italian premiere by Diversion, one of the most important and influential French organisations in the international immersive arts landscape; and the virtual reality documentary Sweet end of the world! by Stefano Conca Bonizzoni, selected by Rai Cinema's VR library, which this year renews its partnership with Videocittà.

The Videoarte section, curated by Damiana Leoni and Rä di Martino, hosts on July 10 a programme of works by some of the most compelling figures on the contemporary international art scene, all dedicated to the theme of water. There's room for Shahzia Sikander, the Pakistani artist known for subverting the traditions of South and Central Asian miniature painting, with the hand-painted cinematic tableau 3 to 12 Nautical Miles, on the stories of trade, colonialism and power that have shaped past and present; for the Milan-based collective FLATFORM, which explores the relationship between image, landscape and perception – already known for exhibitions at MAXXI, the Centre Pompidou and Fondazione Prada, as well as for its 2021 Academy Award nomination – who, in conversation with the curators, will present the work Quello che verrà è solo una promessa: a long single-take sequence recounting the effects of rising waters. Then there's multidisciplinary Argentine artist Cecilia Bengolea, who examines the relationship between body, movement and environment through contemporary dance and popular practices, with the black-and-white work Lighting Dance, exploring the relationship between atmospheric electricity, music and movement; and finally Monira Al Qadiri, the Kuwaiti artist who has exhibited internationally at venues such as the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Palais de Tokyo and the 2022 Venice Biennale's central exhibition "The Milk of Dreams", with Diver, a tale about pearl diving in the Persian Gulf, an activity that sustained the region's economy for centuries. July 11 brings one of the best-known artists on the international scene: Adrian Paci, who in conversation with the curators will present the works Turn on, Di queste luci si servirà la notte, a video installation born from a performance staged on the Arno river, and The Column, a powerful visual metaphor on labour, cultural identity and the dialogue between East and West, weaving together art, migration and the dynamics of globalisation.

The Tiber, a vital presence in the city of Rome, is at the heart of the research by young digital artist Tommaso Cherubini, who for Videocittà studies its past and present, translating hydrological and environmental data into an immersive particle system with the artwork Invisible Ecologies: Tevere, presented in its world premiere. Confluence, produced by Signal as part of the European project CO-VISION, in collaboration with the initiative Save the Confluence and an international team of artists including Marie Tučková, Katarina Gryvul, David Přílučík and the duo Selmeci Kocka Jusko, focuses instead on the ecosystem of Europe's largest floodplain forest, where the Morava and Dyje rivers meet.

Interactive play takes shape in the Garden with another work by Giuseppe La Spada, Particle Catharsis, which engages in dialogue with the multiform installation at G2, inviting the audience to commune with the primordial element and its purifying power through gesture and movement; and with Maelstrom by American artist Lake Heckaman, curated by Luca Martinelli, powered by RNMW, a generative audiovisual installation created in TouchDesigner, a digital ecosystem in which fluid turbulence interacts in real time with code to generate an ever-changing vortex.

Water as a natural, climatic and scientific phenomenon is at the centre of OS Ocean Suite, the artistic-scientific project created by the CMCC – Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change together with Nova System Academy and Planetaria. Through the sonification of over seventy years of climate data related to the ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) phenomenon, the project – positioned on the access ramp to Gazometro G3 for the entire duration of the Festival – transforms the invisible dialogue between ocean and atmosphere into an immersive soundscape, making perceptible through music the deep connections that regulate the planet's climate balance. A meeting of scientific research and artistic creation that translates data, numbers and climate models into sensory experience.

Videocittà reaffirms itself as a place for thought and exchange between artists and creatives, experts and audiences of all ages. With the AQUA series of talks devised by Francesco Rutelli and the Aqua Talks by Simone Arcagni, the Festival broadens its reflection on the theme of water, addressing its environmental, historical and strategic implications, amid climate change, cultural heritage and global geopolitical scenarios.

It kicks off on July 10th with Water Shortages and Extreme Rainfall: Investing in Prevention, Adaptation and Sponge Neighborhoods is Far Better than Complaining and Repairing the Damage. Introduced by Giulio Boccaletti (Scientific Director, CMCC – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change). Speakers: Erasmo D’Angelis, Marco Lombardi, Giovanni Milani, Claudio Rosi, Ginevra Sotirovic, moderated by Natalia Bagnato; it continues on July 11th with “The Lessons of Ancient Rome: Water in the Baths and Fountains; Water for Millions of People Two Thousand Years Ago, from the Caput Mundi to the Atlantic Coasts, to Syria.” Introduced by Alfonsina Russo (Director General for Enhancement, Ministry of Culture). Speakers: Giorgio Ortolani, Alessandro Viscogliosi, moderated by Laura Larcan. It closes on July 12th with “Seas and Oceans in a Changing World: Geopolitics and Navigation; Energy and Underwater Resources; Communications and Security”

Introduced by Alessandro Lanza (President, Fondazione Enrico Mattei). Speakers: Luiza Bialazievicz, Ambassador Vincenzo De Luca, Massimo Frezzotti; moderated by Giovanna Pancheri.

The programme continues with the three AQUA talks, informal and multidisciplinary discussions in which academic and new media expert Simone Arcagni spends the three days of the festival in conversation with artists, creators and figures whose artistic and professional paths are rooted in research, experimentation and thinking outside the box: N.A.I.P., Valentina Tanni, Siamounmagazine, Eki, Valerio Ferrara, Elisabetta Modena, Vino, Matilde De Feo, Federico Ferrazza. These moments of exchange are enriched by a public panel dedicated to the making of the virtual experience In Pinus, with the participation of Professor Giuseppe Scarascia Mugnozza and its creators, as part of the European CO-VISION project, at the amphitheatre.

Videocittà, always attentive to experimentation, new talent and new technologies, hosts the awards ceremony for the IGPDecaux Graphic Award, unveiling the three winning works capable of reinterpreting Rome, the "Eternal City", through the new frontiers of artificial intelligence. The winning works, selected for their visual power and technological innovation, are set to become an urban stage inhabiting the streets of the Capital, bringing digital creativity into dialogue with the everyday fabric of the city. Closing out the festival, the outlook toward the future continues with Cinecittà, whose President Antonio Saccone and CEO Manuela Cacciamani announce it will be directly involved in Videocittà through an initiative aimed at showcasing the talent of a young artist under 35 and making use of the immense heritage of the historic Archive Luce.

Education resonates at the heart of all Videocittà's activities, which over these three days for the city of Rome, in its international dimension, take shape through the participation and creative expression of students from various institutes and academies in the Capital, who present works conceived specifically for Videocittà: the IED European Institute of Design with the site-specific installation Egeria, NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti with ATLANTE, RUFA Rome University of Fine Arts, and the Saint Louis College of Music in Rome with Confluence, six audiovisual performances over three evenings, an experimental workshop in which video and music feed off each other, building a creative flow founded on exchange, relationship and transformation.

Within Videocittà Watercult 2026, Agorà returns: the festival's professional programme, coordinated by Guido Pietro Airoldi and dedicated to the internationalisation of the Italian creative technologies, immersive audiovisual, digital art and contemporary cultural industry supply chain. Carried out with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and ICE – the Italian Trade Agency, it once again establishes itself as a meeting platform for Italian and international operators, buyers, curators, institutions, festivals, creative studios and companies. The 2026 programme will run on July 9 and 10, and will include B2B meetings, pitch presentations, workshops, studio visits to Italian production companies and professional networking moments, with the goal of promoting creative Made in Italy on international markets and generating new opportunities for collaboration, distribution and development for Italian artists, studios and businesses. Following the results of the previous edition, Agorà 2026 aims to further strengthen its international dimension, involving more than 40 foreign operators and consolidating Videocittà's role as a European hub for digital culture, creative innovation and new forms of audiovisual.

Among the new additions to the programme is a collaboration with Filmmaster, one of the most prestigious Italian creative and production companies, celebrating fifty years of activity in 2026. Alfredo Accatino, President and Chief Creative Officer, and Adriano Martella, Head of Creative and Creative Director, will discuss on Saturday, July 11 the creative process that turned water into the narrative principle of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Closing Ceremony, showing how a natural phenomenon can become a collective story, a visual language and a spectacle able to speak to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.

During Videocittà, the third edition of Arte al Gazometro also opens with the exhibition "Riflessi", a diffuse exhibition path spanning installations and site-specific interventions, featuring both Italian and international artists. Curated by Marco Capasso, in collaboration with the "Il Sole" gallery, the "Orma" gallery and the "Eidos" gallery, "Riflessi" explores water not as a mere natural element but as an active device of transformation, able to make visible what normally remains invisible: energy. The initiative was created to foster dialogue between contemporary art, industrial context and research, as part of the cultural activities promoted by Eni.
