An unexpected find to return to the place where it all began, and to close out a musical adventure spanning more than twenty years in the best possible way. "Quasi Casa" is the recording of the last Giardini di Mirò concert, in their hometown of Cavriago, available for pre-order from March 19th - exactly three years after the show - as a limited-edition double vinyl at the following link: https://www.2ndrec.com/products/giardini-di-miro-quasi-casa
The record will be available only on vinyl and as a download, not on streaming platforms, but it can be previewed at a listening party scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th at 8pm, at the following link: https://punknotdiet.bandcamp.com/live/quasi-casa-listening-party-2
It's a double vinyl, enriched with written and visual materials, that encapsulates more than twenty years in the career of one of the cornerstone bands of the Italian independent scene, a group that has flown the flag for a certain way of making music: authentic and attentive to detail, driven by a visceral love of sound explored in the most disparate directions. Moving between post-rock, psychedelia and electronica, the Emilian group has managed, album after album, to shape genuine soundscapes to lose yourself in.
"Quasi Casa" came into being exactly three years ago, on March 19, 2023, when Giardini di Mirò took the stage at the Circolo Kessel (formerly Calamita) in Cavriago - the very place where, in the late Nineties, their project was born - for what would become the band's final concert.
No one, however, knew that evening would be the last time they played live together; nothing was planned or intended that way. At the time, it was simply the closing date of Voiceless, the tour devoted entirely to their instrumental repertoire, which followed the surprise 2021 release of the suite "Del Tutto Illusorio", their last release.
A special date, since the band had never played a proper concert in their hometown.
That's the venue where we started rehearsing and writing. So recount Corrado Nuccini and Jukka Reverberi, the band's founders. That's the space where the first songs of "Rise and Fall of Academic Drifting" were born, followed by "Punk... Not Diet!", "Dividing Opinions", "Good Luck", "Different Times", right up to "Del tutto illusorio". Even our first EP, "Iceberg EP", was recorded there. That's where everything began, and there, by some incredible twist of fate, everything came to an end as well.
There were around two hundred people in the venue, including Markus Mathis, who over the years had documented several of the band's concerts, and did so again that night, recording the whole thing. A recording that was lost and then recently rediscovered, after the band's split was announced.
A coincidence and a story like this one couldn't stay secret. They felt like a sign of fate, a special chance to give their audience, once again, one last time, a small piece of their own life.
Across its 70 minutes of music – with the addition of a brief bit of "jukkiloquy" [stage banter], also taken from that same live show – Quasi Casa is an entirely instrumental journey that sums up a path which, from 2001 to 2023, led Giardini di Mirò to release ten records between studio albums, compilations and soundtracks. But, above all, to meet tens of thousands of people, united by a passion for an increasingly rare and precious way of creating, playing, and living music.
"Quasi Casa" is a tribute to the history of Giardini di Mirò and to their idea of music: played live, alive, collective. The best way to sum up and close a long, rich and extraordinarily human journey shared with others.
We started out in the late Nineties with the idea that making music could improve life, first of all our own. conclude Nuccini and Reverberi. Giardini di Mirò were born in a season when many bands were searching for a form of musical journey marked by a utopian drive. Few words, often in English, music that was skewed and open, aimed at a broad idea of community and sharing. The decision to stop isn't just about our own personal paths. It's about the awareness that the context we came from has changed to the point of almost disappearing.
This record, though, wants to remind us that we did make something beautiful, and that we built a coherent artistic path, one still able to withstand the passage of time.
