A few weeks ago we published a playlist of singles, bonus tracks, outtakes and rarities from the new wave of Anglo-American songwriting. This selection aims to be a continuation of that, giving space to other authorial voices. Here we find the Eastern flavors of Arooj Aftab, the politicized, protest-driven poetry of Marjan Farsad, the deeply personal style of Belgian artist Chantal Acda, and the German-language pop-rock of Christin Nichols.
Kate Stables, meanwhile, revisits one of her best compositions, “Keep Going”, immersing it in a peaceful sonic oasis, free of barriers or boundaries. Vast atmospheric expanses also open up in "American Spirits", by an artist who in 2021 made a short record so intensely delicate that I have no hesitation in calling it one of the high points of recent Anglo-American songwriting. And as with Cassandra Jenkins, that distinctly New York style also surfaces in the music of Matt Berninger, who in one of the two selected tracks reinterprets a song by a band that left an indelible mark on the musical and cultural history of the great East Coast metropolis.
We also listen to Anaïs Mitchell, Kevin Morby, Cate Le Bon, Marissa Nadler, Michael Stipe in collaboration with Big Red Machine, but above all Sharon Van Etten, because between a stunning album, a triumphant tour and singles like “Porta”, 2022 is definitely her year.
