From Lana Del Rey to Xiu Xiu, from Mercury Rev to Patti Smith: the most interesting new releases

Lana Del Rey – “Tough” (Feat. Quavo)

Lana Del Rey has unveiled her new single, “Tough”, featuring Migos rapper Quavo. “Tough” harks back to the hip-hop influences of the “Born To Die” era. It's also the first collaboration between the queen of Hollywood sadcore and a rapper since those featured on her 2017 album “Lust For Life”, which included features from The Weeknd (“Lust For Life”), A$AP Rocky (“Summer Bummer” and “Groupie Love”) and Playboi Carti (“Summer Bummer”). "Tough" comes with a music video directed by Wyatt Spain Winfrey, set in a rural landscape: watch it below.

Giungla – “Distance”

Emanuela Drei, better known as Giungla, has released the second single, titled “Distance”, from her upcoming album, whose title has yet to be revealed. Discussing the track, intense and driving, somewhere between grunge and shoegaze, the Bologna-based artist said: “This song was born right after the pandemic. During those months I felt like I was looking at everything that made up my days only from a close, limited distance (the phone in my hand, the wall, the buildings around me), and I realized it had become completely impossible for me to imagine and visualize anything when I closed my eyes. This feeling lasted for a while, and so it also became a song”.

Mercury Rev – “Ancient Love”

As we announced a month ago, Mercury Rev will release a new album. The follow-up to 2015's “The Light In You” will be titled “Born Horses” and will be released on September 6 via Bella Union. Alongside that announcement, the Buffalo band had shared the first single taken from the album, “Patterns“. Today Jonathan Donahue and co. have released a new single, titled “Ancient Love”, about which they commented: “What we are today stems from our thoughts and perceptions of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind, which originates from ancient love”.

Xiu Xiu – “Common Loon”

Xiu Xiu have announced the release of their new album “13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips”, due out on 27 September via Polyvinyl, a year on from their previous record Ignore Grief. Mixed by John Congleton (Chelsea Wolfe, Swans, Lana Del Rey), the album is preceded by the single “Common Loon”, described by Stewart himself as “a boogie embrace for the queer perverts of the entire multiverse”. Below is the video for the track:

Patti Smith – “Summertime Sadness”

This year Patti Smith is expected in Italy for two dates in September. Meanwhile, the tour that kicked off last April in her hometown of New York has landed in Ireland for a double date at Dublin's Vicar Street. The high priestess of rock ran through a set of career staples along with a few covers: among them, notably, Bob Bob Dylan's “Man In The Long Black Coat” and Lana Del Rey's “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey. Below, a fan video capturing the live streaming of the latter:
